By an act of the state legislature, Kootenai County was formed from the southern portion of the county on January 23, 1915, with St. Maries serving as the county seat. named for an Indian chief from Coeur d'Alene. Although some development started after the Mullan Road was finished in 1860, the majority of residents arrived in the region after gold was discovered nearby St. Maries in 1880.
